A.I.R SHOWCASE VI. – IVAR ROBAN KRIŽIĆ- WHEREWHEN Collective
Westbahnstudios gemeinnützige GmbH
Preysinggasse 7-9/1
1150 Wien
Start: 20:00
The WhereWhen Collective is a body working at the intersection of improvisation, composition, and performative practice. In shifting constellations, the collective brings together musicians and artists from the fields of jazz, new music, electroacoustics, and free improvisation.
Current members include: Nikola Vuković (trumpet), Tobias Meissl (vibraphone), Maiken Beer (cello), Olivia De Prato (violin), Victor Lowrie (viola), Kasho Chualan (piano/electronics), Christof Ressi (electronics), and Ivar Roban Križić (double bass/text).
What can a collective body do? Can it transcend the sum of its individual components? Can it turn a writhing, undulating mass of flesh, bone, and synapses into something entirely new? In preparing this performance we became a collective body, with a permeable membrane that allows entry, exchange, and constant renewal. By joining us here and now, you become part of our body—a new multi-functional limb sprouting at the periphery, in constant exchange with every other element of the structure. Can you sense the whole from where you are? Can you sense the process of integration? How does it feel to be a collective body?
The project is supported by a composition stipend from the City of Vienna (MA-7) and by the SKE Fonds.

Anna Webber, adjust (2022)
Formed in 2020, the Anzû Quartet pays homage to Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps by actively commissioning and performing new works for this iconic instrumentation. Their debut album, adjust, was released on Cantaloupe Music in April 2025. The name anzû refers to a massive, fire and water breathing bird found in Babylonian and Sumerian mythology. In these ancient texts, Anzû is linked to death and destruction as well as birth and creation, reflecting the juxtaposing themes of calamity and salvation often expressed through birdsong in Messiaen's quartet.

Kulturnhalle Leipzig
The Anzû Quartet is a New York-based ensemble dedicated entirely to the music of today. Inspired by Olivier Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps, it commissions and performs new works for the same instrumentation as well as reinterpretations of the original. Since its foundation in 2020, Anzû has performed in Europe and the USA, working with composers such as Anna Webber and Mario Diaz de Leon. The members-Olivia De Prato, Ashley Bathgate, Ken Thomson and Karl Larson-are leading voices in the contemporary music scene, shaping formations such as Bang on a Can All-Stars, Mivos Quartet and Ensemble Signal.
Anthony Romaniuk is a genre-fluid pianist whose musical voice combines his classical training with a love of jazz, early music, improvisation and experimental sounds. Equally confident on piano, harpsichord or synthesizer, he performs worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Vox Luminis, among others. His acclaimed solo albums on Alpha Classics explore the boundaries of the classical repertoire through bold programming and sonic diversity.

Cécile McLorin Salvant’s most daring and multifaceted creation yet, Ogresse is a musical and theatrical tour-de-force by an incomparable artist. It is a haunting, wryly humorous, and “staggeringly original” (The Wall Street Journal) work that blends jazz, chamber music, opera, art song, and many generations of storytelling traditions into a whole that feels at once ancient and cutting edge. Featuring Salvant’s original libretto, costumes of her own design, visual projections, and an ensemble led by Darcy James Argue, this is a true passion project that continues to evolve with each performance. Take advantage of the opportunity to experience it in the dynamic Zankel Hall.

Formed based on Olivier Messiaen’s seminal Quartet for the End of Time, The Anzû Quartet is comprised of musicians from Bang on a Can, Mivos Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, and Bearthoven. The group is dedicated to commissioning and premiering new works of unique instrumentation.
After touring US and Europe, with Anna Webber’s Adjust, the Anzû Quartet will make an NYC premiere of works by Ryan Carter, Mario Diaz de Leon, and Anna Webber.
One of the first major pieces Webber has composed for an ensemble, Adjust tackles the meeting of the composed and improvised music worlds in a thrilling five-part work.
Diaz de Leon’s Tree of Life is an ecotheologically motivated response to the Quatuor pour la fin du temps inspired by Rev 22:1-2.
Ryan Carter’s Frictionless Objects incorporates wild extended techniques and expanded tonality in an emotive ten-minute work.
