Sarah Hennies is a visionary American composer and percussionist, who “writes music rife with psychological effects and emotional undercurrents” (The New York Times). Meditative yet propulsive, challenging yet engaging, her work is concerned with a variety of musical and sociopolitical issues, including queer and trans identity and psychoacoustics. For her Portrait, two brilliant ensembles—the Mivos Quartet and Yarn/Wire—perform new works written especially for them.

ANZÛ QUARTET at Columbus Makes Art

The Anzû Quartet is an ensemble of veterans from NYC’s contemporary music community. Olivia De Prato (violin), Ashley Bathgate (cello), Ken Thomson (clarinet), and Karl Larson (piano) honor Olivier Messiaen’s “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” by commissioning new works for this iconic instrumentation. This performance is part of the free “New Music at Short North Stage” concert series. Seating is available on a first-come first-served basis and performances are recommended for ages 9 and older. 

Anzû Quartet at Hamilton College

Formed in 2020, the Anzû Quartet is an ensemble dedicated to the music of our time and the recent canon. A collaboration between internationally renowned performers of contemporary music, this new quartet pays homage to Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps by actively commissioning and performing new works for this iconic instrumentation alongside Messiaen’s original masterpiece. Free admission

With the 'posthuman social club' we want to think outside of the box of what has been labeled “the human realm of Reason” and develop new regimes of perception, sensuality and corporeality that can with care and afterthought lead us the way away from our humanist, modern form of making and thinking the world to more inclusive ways of sharing many worlds with other critters.
In the permeation of choreography and composition, with club culture, philosophy, ecology and media art we invite speculation of what a post-human social – or even a post-human society – could actually mean. We cannot overcome the euro- and anthropocentric, often misogynistic and racist tendencies of the „Enlightenment“ tradition overnight. The 'posthuman social clubs' are a sensual attunement, cultivation, celebration, exultation, differentiation and problematisation of these [posthuman] desires.

JG Thirlwell presents string quartets “Narcolepsy”, “Ozymandias”, “Heliophobia”, “Apeirophobia”, and more from his new album Dystonia on the National Sawdust stage. Performed by Mivos Quartet, “one of America’s most daring and ferocious new-music ensembles” (The Chicago Reader), the six-piece program features works composed between 2014-2021 that draw on influences across the different facets of Thirlwell’s cross-genre practice creating music of dramatic intensity and evocative, cinematic quality. These string quartets feature both long-form, conventional writing and open instructional pieces.

Olivia De Prato

The talented violinist Olivia de Prato returns with a program of personal importance, featuring new works for violin and electronics. The concert celebrates the recent release of de Prato’s album, I A.M. - Artist Mother Project, which explores the intersection of the role of motherhood and the pursuit of artistic endeavors.

Sit onstage and enjoy a free drink during these hour-long weeknight Pop-Ups concerts, and mingle with the musicians and fellow concertgoers after the show. Onstage seating is first-come, first-served.

7PM - Public Records, Brooklyn

Between 1988 and 2010, Steve Reich composed three string quartets – ‘Different Trains’, ‘Triple Quartet’ and ‘WTC 9/11’. Deutsche Grammophon now presents this trilogy of works for the first time on one album, in definitive new recordings from the Mivos Quartet. Hailed by The Chicago Reader as “one of America’s most daring and ferocious new-music ensembles”, the Mivos players developed their interpretations of the three quartets – inspired by the music of speech, echoes of Bartók and the events of a day transformed by terror – in close collaboration with the composer. Reich himself supported the project from inception to completion, answering the group’s questions about fine musical details, offering advice on matters of style and endorsing the finished album: ‘Steve Reich: The String Quartets' which Mivos brings to PR for a special NYC release show.
